I was so lucky to receive a complementary corn kit to review. The first think that came to my mind was to prepare Maizitos con questo, a colombian recipe that brings me so many memories form my childhood. It is a very easy recipe to make and the corn kit had the perfect tools to facilitate the preparation. The Corn Kit includes: Corn Butterer, Corn Silker, Interlocking Corn Holders and Corn Stripper The products are made with good materials, are dishwasher safe, heat resistant and very sturdy. The company has Swiss innovation and it is now available in the US with other products that for sure will make cooking easier. Maizitos con queso -recipe Ingredients
Preparation Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F In a pot bring water to a boil and add corn kernels. Cook for about 3-4 minutes. With a Corn Stripper, peel the corn Place the corn into on an oven resistant plate. Cover with mozzarella cheese and dressing. Bake for around 20 min covered with aluminum foil. Then remove foil and cook for 5 minutes. Top with the parmesan cheese. Some people also add bacon on top of the cheese. Time to enjoy and try not to eat the whole plate by myself.
Now tell me, have you had maizitos before? How do you like your corn?

As a kid I was always looking forward to Christmas time. Of course the presents were a very important reason to like Christmas however in was not only about that. Getting together with the family during Las Novenas was just as important and it was fun. Las Novenas are a set of prayers recited during the nine days before Christmas. Starting on December 16th thru the 24th (nine days = novenas) families get together to pray, eat and sign villancicos (Christmas carols). So each day you get together in a different house to celebrate and pray in honor of Virgin Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus. This tradition is similar to Las Posadas in Mexico, although the food we serve in Colombia is different. We usually have buñuelos, natilla, and of course traditional Colombian appetizers (empanadas, papas rellenas, pandequesos etc) If you get to visit Colombia during this time of the year make sure you get to observe one of the novenas. I am sure you will not be disappointed.
My dear friend Teresa Garza from Checa La Movie invited me to Carlos Vives concert. I wanted to go so bad and my dream came true.
The concert was great. Carlos Vives knows how to put a show. The concerts started with a video showing parts of Colombia and then all the fun followed. Not only the music, lyrics and songs are great, but Carlos Vives puts a show that is worth the wait, the drive and for those that paid, the money. His musicians are awesome. I love the slideshows with each one of his songs and how he intereacts with the audience. Now the best part. He surprised us with Juanes. They sang together and it was so much fun Thanks so much Teresa for thinking about me. You made my day and it was a pleasure getting to know you. I cannot wait until the next concert! A Journey to Colombia - a documentary filmA film about family, history, culture & the positive things about Colombia & the Colombian people. A Fractured Atlas Fiscally Sponsored Campaign. When I first heard about the project I was really impressed. I think that we are in need of a documentary that shows the country without the stereotypes. We need to hear about the positive things Colombia has to offer. It is more than just coffee. Colombia has beautiful flowers, delicious food and awesome fashion designers. The world has to learn about it. The people behind the idea of the documentary needs your help. They want to raise money to make this project happen. You can visit their site A Journey to Colombia to learn more and make a donation (which is tax deductible) So here it is your opportunity to make this great project happen. Your donation wheter it is 10 dollars, 100 dollars or more would make the difference! Adios al 2013 y un muy feliz 2013On December 31st we say good bye to the old year and prepare ourselves to receive the New Year. All around the world people have different traditions and ways to receive the New Year. In Colombia those traditions are in the form of some rituals called "agueros". They are actually some rituals that were performed back in the time on Spain and France and that after the years took the form of the now days agueros in Colombia. This “agueros” are followed on December 31st to bring on good fortune in the New Year. For example the tradition of wearing new clothes so the rest of the next year you will always have new clothes in your closet. We also eat 12 grapes during the final 12 seconds of the old year asking for a wish for each grape for each respective month of the year. There is also an “aguero” of wearing yellow underwear wearing them inside out and changing them at midnight for good luck on the next year. The same “aguero” with red underwear is for good love during the year. Another “aguero” is to broom our homes and clean them very well to take out all the bad energies; we do "saumerios" or cleansings of the homes to get rid of bad energies. There is also an “aguero” about burning the old year (Año Viejo). We make a puppet full of fireworks and it is burned at midnight to get rid of bad feelings on the past year. Another “aguero” is to go out at midnight with a luggage or suitcase and go around the block for travels in the next year. All families get together with food, deserts, ron, aguardiente (alcohol beverage) and of course the grapes and champagne to toast at midnight. The rituals (agueros) are for prosperity, health, love and happiness. However the way I see it they are more to keep families together having fun and looking forward to a better year. And I know this, because even though in my family we do not believe on this agueros we still do some of the things just to keep the culture alive and have fun. Now, you might decide to try out one of them, they might not change your luck in 2013 but I will assure you they will provide your family with some laughs and happiness. Happy 2013 everyone, thanks for reading and keep connected, we will have more to share with all you in the next year. Feliz Año Nuevo |
